The Luminescent Mod for the iPhone is an impressive addition to any iPhone. It adds a glowing Apple logo similar to that of the MacBooks to the iPhone in the exact same spot where it should be. I, as an avid modder decided to buy this as my iPhone 4 was out of warranty anyway and the mod looked so cool. I ordered it from a seller in HK for only £6 with P&P and so waited around two weeks for it to arrive.
The package arrived yesterday, cool as can be. I ripped it open and found a nearly wrapped bundle of bubblewrap. I tore this to shreds and what lay beneath was a neatly packaged box full of all the tools. It wasn’t a cardboard box mind you, a full plastic box which had been designed specifically for being the carrier of these items.
I then set about reading the instruction manual and, seeing how complex it was decided to search on YouTube for an alternative/addition to guide me through this. It seemed that you had to wire it up to the main logic board of the phone and this was not something that I was willing to f*ck up. I decided to go with this video as it was a) In English. I can understand a bit of Chinese and some of the videos included translations however this video seemed the easiest to understand (and) b) It had nice close ups and good camera angles not to mention HD which really helps since the connectors are so small.
So I set about doing it (you can pretend to be me following the video if you really want) and took it apart no fuss since I have already disassembled my phone at least 2 times just…. Well just to be cool (haha I’m so not 😛 ). But yeah so I did that and then came the f*cking tedious bit where you had to place a wire from the LED (the people watching the video will know what I mean) onto a literally 1mm x 1.5mm square (bear in mind it cannot touch the outer and the wire is around 1mm thick, plus the wire doesn’t stick and is really hard to manipulate, not to mention the annoyingness of the wire flapping too and fro in an unordered fashion.
Eventually I got it to stick and tested it and it was working perfectly (blah blah blah). Then you had to put the EMI shield back on and I did that and found the LED to no longer be functioning (I must have knocked the wire when placing the shield back on). So I thought ‘Hey ho’ and opened it up again and placed it back on (which took around 10 mins). I then put the shield back on and it stopped working again…. Argh!!! I repeated this about 5 times until I just got so frustrated that I just stuck so much tape on it that it stayed there. I then proceeded to put the phone back together and earth the wire however the little screw recommended by the video to remove decided to jump off the screwdriver and into the side of the phone. By then I was too pissed to do any more so let it be.
I then proceeded to put the back back (haha repeat) on. The new one was thinner and a lot harder to slide than any I have ever used before (I have ordered around 3 replacements because of, well droppages 😉 ). It was really hard to get on (oh shuttup those with minds of the dirty kind) and took a lot of pushing (oh grow up) before it eventually got on. Even then, light still leaks out the sides. Went to test the light and….. Nothing. Double Argh! Removed the back, pushed it down and put the back back on. And it worked! Yay!
But not so fast. The morning after, the light wasn’t working. There was no way that I was going to take the back off again and so I decided to push on the back where the EMI shield is and it worked, for a bit. Now it requires a gentle push for it to work sometimes. I may take off the back and try again but at this current moment in time I can’t be bothered. Oh and the replacement back doesn’t seem to want one of my screws so the back is being held on by the very very strong sides and one screw.
This is a mod for the very experienced. It looks cool and let me tell you, a lot of people loved it and they seemed to say that it was worth two hours of work. I did like it and it defo looks cool just for inexperienced and low patience people, steer well clear of this. It isn’t a walk in the park. The video makes it look so easy but trust me, it isn’t.
As a side note, there is an easier version 2 for those who want to check it out however this is a higher price.
